SHIF Referendum – Testimonies

SHIF is an institution which should be revamped and tremendously improved. There is a lot of dissatisfaction on the part of beneficiaries in terms of due settlement of medical expenses. This is even more pronounced in the case of retirees. I know a case which happened to fall into my hands by chance. This retiree (he passed away on 13 Dec. 2015) had to call ILO-Addis offices every day to get the refund of money which he paid to hospitals. I had to call someone in SHIF to help out. The case was finally settled after about 15 days of “begging”.

The issue of retirees should have been given even more attention than the active members.

I therefore stand to support the campaign to improve the SHF service as proposed.

I vote AGAINST the increase to:

– Give back the power of decision to insured persons; and
– Obtain a better administration and governance.

The first day which I was faced with the problem of medical insurance was in May 2013. The UNECA Health Care Center (UNHCC) referred me to a laboratory outside the UN compound, where they did not recognize my SHIF card. This was the day I realized that I don’t really have medical insurance coverage in emergency situations. Since that day I have been raising this issue but there has not been any solution so far.

I vote AGAINST the increase to:

– Give back the power of decision to insured persons; and
– Obtain a better administration and governance
